How To Get Started As A Runner

How To Get Started As A Runner

For many of us, running is a very intimidating sport. When we think of runners, we envision twig-legged gazelles effortlessly running around in their 2.5 inch slit shorty-shorts, barely breaking a sweat. There may be some truth to that stereotype, but let me assure you, they had to start from the same place you are starting from today. As with anything, practice makes perfect.

Training

We can help you get started as a runner.

When it comes to running, you need to build a solid base. A solid base will ensure success further down the road and reduce your chances of getting injured as a new runner.

The best way to get started as a runner is slow and steady using a combination of walking and running. Ideally, you want to start by run-walking to allow for a slow adaptation to running. These will gradually increase from a 1:1 ratio of walking to running to a 1:10 ratio of walking to running.

A training schedule is not only used to keep you motivated, but it also prevents you from running too much too quickly. It is recommended that you only increase your mileage or time by 10% each week. If you increase your running too quickly, you can get injured which is the number one cause of people giving up on their running aspirations.

One of the best things about joining a run clinic is the people you will meet. When you sign up for a clinic, you will be departing on a journey of learning, adventure and personal growth with a group of like-minded people. The run community as a whole is a fantastic group of different abilities.

Nutrition

At this point in your running career, there is no need to worry about nutrition just yet. When you start running longer distances and races, nutrition will become an important part of your training and racing. Most commonly, people use gels and gummies to supplement their energy on a long run, which usually equates to about 100 – 200 calories every 45 minutes of running.

Footwear

When selecting a pair of shoes, it is important to be properly fitted for a pair of runners. You want to make sure that you purchase a pair of shoes suitable for running and are not too big or too small. You can learn more about the importance of a properly fitted shoe here.

A safe running program with a group of supportive individuals is one of the best ways of achieving your running goal.

Happy Running!
