How to Choose Supportive Home Footwear

How to Choose Supportive Home Footwear

We may not think we spend a lot of time walking around the house, but the reality is that all those minutes spent preparing a meal, hosting a party or cleaning the house add up. But did you know this is the perfect time to slip something supportive onto your feet?

Wearing arch support slippers helps maintain the consistency of support. For many people, it is an easy way to improve overall comfort as well as control.

Home footwear can support your feet, while keeping you warm and cozy.

Arch Support Slippers

Here are a few tips to consider when choosing arch support slippers.

1. Softer Isn’t Always Better

People generally like the soft, warm and fuzzy slippers because they are cozy. However, unless the liner is removable to accommodate an orthotic, there is often very little support in these types of slippers.

Nowadays, there are some brands that are still cozy and warm but have an outsole more similar to a shoe and have a removable liner so you can slip in an orthotic or over-the-counter insole. SorelBiotime and Birkenstock all make clog or slipper styles with removable liners.

2. Look For Built-in Arch Support Slippers

Some brands, such as Birkenstock, have clog styles with built-in arches. This way, you get support but don’t need to worry about the inconvenience of switching an orthotic in and out of your arch support slippers.

3. Don’t Forget About Sandals

We often recommend sandals at home as an alternative to arch support slippers. Again, this would be something with a removable liner, such as Cambrian or Portofino sandal, or something with built-in support, such as Birkenstock, Sole or Montrail sandals.

4. Replace Regularly

Just because you aren’t wearing arch support slippers or sandal outside, doesn’t mean it will last forever. It may still look new and clean, but the cushioning and control will wear down as you wear it. A year or two would be the maximum lifespan of a pair of indoor shoes.
